Cold Storage
Storing cryptocurrencies on an offline device or paper — out of internet reach.
Cold storage is a method of storing cryptocurrencies where private keys are completely offline — without any internet connection, and therefore out of reach of hackers.
Cold storage methods:
1. Hardware wallet — specialized device (Ledger, Trezor) • Most practical, has PIN and recovery • Direct access for transactions without compromising key
2. Paper wallet — private key printed or written on paper • Free but fragile (water, fire, wear) • Generated once, never online
3. Steel/metal backup — seed phrase engraved in metal • Fire and water resistant • Bilodell, CryptoSteel, CRYPTOTAG
4. Air-gapped computer — old laptop that was never and will never be on internet • Transactions signed offline, transferred to online device via QR code or USB
Recommendation: Hardware wallet for active users + metal seed backup at secure location.
