Gas Optimization on Ethereum
Strategies for reducing gas costs on Ethereum — when to send, how to save.
Gas optimization is the skill of reducing transaction costs on Ethereum — especially important during periods of high network activity.
How Ethereum gas works:
Saving strategies:
1. Right timing • Weekends and Asian night hours have lower gas • Etherscan Gas Tracker — track gas in real time • Trade in low gas periods for DeFi operations
2. Gas limit vs Gas price • Gas limit = maximum gas willing to spend • Gas price = how much you pay per gas unit • Metamask: "Advanced" → manually set max fee
3. Batch transactions • Some protocols (1inch, Permit2) batch multiple transactions • Reduces total gas per operation
4. Layer 2 for regular transactions • Arbitrum, Optimism, Base — 10-100× cheaper than Ethereum mainnet • Bridge once, trade on L2
5. ERC-20 Permit2 (Uniswap) • Approve and swap in one transaction • Saves one transaction per token
6. Cancel pending transactions • Old low gas transaction blocks queue • Speed up or cancel (send self-transfer with higher gas)
